Matthew, a 16.3 dark bay Irish Draught Thoroughbred gelding, was born on the 2nd May 1992.
He arrived at the Sanctuary on the 19th August 2002, from the Avon and Somerset Police Force UK. He was retired from duty with navicular, which has affected his feet and was a direct result from working on roads and pavements.
Matthew is named after the old boat ‘The Matthew’ which is moored in Bristol Docks and is an honorary member of the Matthew Society.
He and his great and faithful friend Northavon who has sadly passed away were inseparable, having met up again after two years apart, when Matthew was retired to the Sanctuary. They had worked together and been great buddies for 10 years during their working careers. Thankfully Matthew has now formed a very strong bond with St Michael, who also served for the Avon & Somerset Police Force and he and Matthew would have worked together.
